The first of the expert debates on the postal voting answered questions of Czech voters abroad

The call for timely registration on the special voters' list and completion of the necessary formalities or the detailed process of the newly introduced postal voting for Czechs abroad was heard at the first expert online debate on Thursday 14 November 2024.

Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior and the Digital and Information Agency (DIA) presented the basic principles of postal voting, which Czechs abroad will try out in practice in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2025, to about 200 participants from around the world at a virtual debate organized by the platform We Want Remote Voting.

The main message of the first debate was an appeal to voters abroad not to delay in completing the necessary formalities which enable postal voting. The first condition is to be registered in the special list of voters at the embassy abroad, and therefore the deadline of 40 calendar days before the elections, when the list is closed, was mentioned several times. There are several ways of registering on the special electoral roll, including by means of a data box. Data Box generally facilitates communication with the state and can be set up at Czech POINT locations, which are available at 76 embassies abroad and at Czech Post offices in the home country.

That is why the first of a series of planned debates took place before Christmas, so that foreign Czechs would have enough time to use their travels to embassies and to the Czech Republic to process the necessary documents and formalities - both personal documents and data boxes or e-identities. The next debate is planned for spring 2025. Both ministries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior will regularly inform the public about the procedures and conditions for postal voting.
