How to: Postal voting for Czechs living abroad

 

Czechs living abroad will vote by mail for the first time in the parliamentary elections 2025. Voters need to fulfil several conditions to be eligible to vote by mail.   

POSTAL VOTING TIMETABLE (Czech citizen aged over 18 years)

 

1. WHAT TO DO NOW

(no later than 40 days  before the Election Day)

Apply to register on the Special Voters List

What you need to know: to vote by post, Czechs living abroad must register on a special Voters List kept at the Embassy or Consulate General closest to their place of long-term residence abroad.

How do I register?

  • In person: at the Embassy, Consulate General or some Honorary Consulates (in the application, you will need to fill in a residence address falling within the district of the Embassy or Consulate General where you apply).
  • By post: paper form, certified signature.
  • Via data box.
  • Online: starting from 1 April 2025, via the Citizen Portal (for the time being, only Czech mobile numbers are accepted for access to the Citizen Portal; foreign mobile numbers will be accepted starting from mid-April).
  • By proxy: your proxy can submit your application in person at the Embassy or Consulate General.

Deadline: no later 40 days before the Election Day.

2. PRESIDENT OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC ANNOUNCES THE ELECTIONS

May/June 2025

(no later than 90 days before the Election Day)

What you need to know: Once you have registered on the Special Voters List and the President of the Czech Republic has announced the elections, you can apply for a postal vote at the Embassy or Consulate General where you are listed on the Special Voters List. If you have moved in the meantime, you should update your address.

 

How do I apply for a postal vote?

  • In person: at the Embassy or Consulate General (you will be asked to provide your address).
  • By post: paper form, certified signature.
  • Via data box.
  • Online: via the Citizen Portal (at the time of the elections, foreign mobile numbers will be accepted to access the Citizen Portal).
  • By proxy: the proxy can submit your application in person at the Embassy or Consulate General.

Deadline: Application in writing: no later than 35 days before the Election Day.

Deadline: Application in person: no later than 2 days before the Election Day.

3. 40 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION DAY – August 2025 – closing date for registrations on  the Special Voters List.

The Special Voters List will be closed for registrations  in August 2025.  You will not be able to vote by post unless you have registered.

 

4. 35 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION DAY – the last opportunity to apply in writing for a postal vote.

 

5. 25 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION DAY – Embassy or Consulate General sends out postal vote packs.

What will you receive? 

  • Postal voting instructions. 
  • Postal voting statement.
  • Two envelopes –  marked “DORUČOVACÍ” and “ÚŘEDNÍ”.

When? The Embassy or Consulate General will send the postal vote pack no later than 25 days before the Election Day.

 

6. 2 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION DAY – the last opportunity to apply by email for a postal vote.

 

7. VOTING:

How do I vote?

  • Go to the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic to download and print out the ballot paper of your electoral region (you will find the link in the postal voting instructions).
  • Put the ballot paper in the “ÚŘEDNÍ” envelope and seal it.
  • Sign the postal voting statement!
  • Put the “ÚŘEDNÍ” envelope and the postal voting statement in the “DORUČOVACÍ” envelope. Send the “DORUČOVACÍ” envelope by mail or delivery service back to the Embassy or Consulate General.

Note: Send the envelope by a reliable delivery service. Check the delivery deadlines before sending. Your ballot paper must be delivered to the Embassy or Consulate General before the close of voting.

 

8. ELECTIONS:

Delivery and receipt of ballots: Your ballot paper will be received by the Embassy or Consulate General and counted in the election.

Delivery deadline: Your ballot paper must be delivered to the Embassy or Consulate General before the close of voting.
