Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union
on the German-Czech Declaration on the Mutual Relations
and their Future Development

The Presidency of the European Union welcomes the signature of the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany on 21 January 1997 of the Joint German-Czech Declaration.

The signature marks a decisive and historic step in the process of good-neighbourly relations and partnership between a EU member state and an associated partner. The Presidency hopes that this will receive broad parliamentary support. The Presidency would like to express its confidence that the cooperation as envisaged in the Joint German-Czech Declaration will lead to deeper understandig between the two neighbouring peoples.
