A working lunch with the Chairman of the National Coalition Party, Petteri Orpo was held at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki within its Presidency of the EU Council on 4 October 2022. The main topics were security, the war in Ukraine, relations with Russia and economic issues.
At the beginning of the meeting, Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Daniel Horák summarized the results of the most important recent actions and events within the Czech EU Presidency, including the agreement of the Ministers on combating high energy prices by setting a price cap and measures to reduce the demand for electricity. He also presented the upcoming Prague summit, where Heads of States and Governments will meet on 6 and 7 October 2022 to discuss primarily security and energy issues. This will be the first meeting of the European Political Community, followed by an informal European Council.
In his speech, Petteri Orpo addressed the Russian aggression against Ukraine and Finland's and Europe's response to the latest developments regarding the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories by the Russian Federation. According to Orpo, Europe needs to strengthen its own defence and support to Ukraine and must also focus on the complex protection of its critical infrastructure. The National Coalition Party is a traditional supporter of Finland's NATO membership and believes that the fastest ever ratification process will soon be completed. On domestic political issues, Petteri Orpo highlighted the growing public debt, the dire situation in the health sector, labour market reform, including attracting more foreign workers, further strengthening of defence, enhancing the role of the capital market and increasing investment by transforming the investment environment. The EU needs to cooperate much more in the energy sector and to strengthen the trade among EU member states. At the same time, the EU must remain an organization based on values such as the rule of law.
