The United Nations Truce Supervision Mission in Syria (UNTSO)
Established in 1948, UNTSO is the first peacekeeping mission in the history of the United Nations. It was created to monitor the ceasefire agreements between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and over the years, its mandate has evolved to encompass a broader role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution across the Middle East.
The mission’s core task has been to supervise ceasefire agreements, maintain liaison with local authorities, and observe and report on developments that might threaten peace. UNTSO’s peacekeeping forces are deployed to conflict zones, acting as neutral intermediaries and providing critical information that aids in the prevention of further violence.
While the mission was initially focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it has expanded its role over the decades to include the Syrian border region, particularly along the Golan Heights, and has become central in managing the complex and volatile security landscape of Syria.
