The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, on its official X profile, welcomed the political agreement reached at the EU Council meeting on lifting economic sanctions against Syria. In doing so, it supported the EU’s stance, which for 14 years has stood by the Syrian people, engaged in efforts to find a political solution, and played a leading role in providing financial assistance. Following the fall of the Assad regime, the EU suspended certain economic sanctions in February and has now announced its political decision to lift them entirely.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus will continue its longstanding tradition of humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people, which since 2012 has contributed to the implementation of up to 145 projects with a total value of nearly 40 million USD. These projects have been carried out in cooperation with local and international partners across Syrian territory.

The decision of the EU Council, to which Czech diplomacy made a significant contribution, will enable the recovery efforts in Syria to move to a new level. Czechia will be part a of it.
