On 9th September, 2024 the Charge d'affaires of the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Syria Roman Masarik was pleased to meet new Head of Delegation of the European Union for Syria based in Beirut Michael Ohnmacht.
The new EU Chargé d'affaires expressed his keenness to lead the European Union's efforts in Syria, communicate with partners to advance a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and support the European Union's activities in various sectors.
Michael Ohnmacht expressed his honor to serve as the new Chargé d'Affaires of the European Delegation to Syria, stressing that "I am pleased to assume this role at such a pivotal time." Ohnmacht said that "my relationship with the Middle East has deepened over the years, and this relationship was first established while I was studying Arabic language and literature at the Institute of Teaching Arabic to Foreigners in Damascus, and then I continued my academic pursuits in Islamic sciences and modern history, which deepened my appreciation for the rich history and vibrant cultures of the region." “With two decades of experience in the diplomatic service, including assignments in Tripoli, Riyadh, Beirut and Ramallah, I believe I bring with me a wealth of experience in fostering strong cooperative relations,” the European diplomat said, expressing his “look forward to working closely with partners to promote a political solution to the Syrian crisis and support the EU’s activities in various sectors.”
Michael Ohnmacht, 54, has been a German diplomat since 1998, holding a number of diplomatic posts in several Arab countries, including Palestine, Lebanon, France, Saudi Arabia and Libya, where he announced the end of his diplomatic mission on July 17.
Between 2010 and 2013, Ohnmacht served as Deputy Secretary-General for Franco-German Cooperation, Advisor to the French Minister of European Affairs, and Deputy Head of Mission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. Between 2009 and 2010, Onmacht served as Deputy Head of the European Union Mission in Beirut, after having been Political Advisor at the German Foreign Office between 2006 and 2009. Between 2000 and 2003, Onmacht served as Head of the Press and Cultural Affairs Department and Political Advisor at the German Mission to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.
