In a significant development for international cooperation in the fields of public health, environmental research, and humanitarian aid, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU) and the Syrian Medical Association (SMA).
The agreement was formalized in Damascus with Dr. Ghassan Fandi, Head of the Syrian Medical Association, and Prof. Petr Sklenicka, Rector of the Czech University of Life Sciences. The representatives of the Embassy of the Czech Republic were present during the official ceremony of signing of the MoU in Damascus, namely Charge d’affaires a.i. Mr. Roman Masarik and economic & development diplomat Mr. Tomas Chlopcik.
The purpose of this MOU is to foster collaboration between CZU and SMA in areas vital to public health and environmental science, with a particular focus on humanitarian concerns. The key objectives of this partnership are:
1. Access to EU and UN Programs and Projects
Through this agreement, SMA will gain enhanced access to the European Union and United Nations programs that support projects in public health, environmental studies, and humanitarian aid.
2. Collaborative Research on Environmental Health
One of the core areas of focus is on research initiatives that examine how environmental factors impact public health. Both institutions recognize that environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change present ongoing challenges to health systems worldwide.
3. Joint Project on Climate Change and Public Health
Among the planned joint projects is a pivotal study on the impact of climate change on public health, specifically in relation to vulnerable populations. This initiative will also assess the health consequences of economic instability, offering a multidimensional view of public health challenges. The project is expected to produce findings that will help shape policy and inform public health strategies in both Syria and the broader region.
This MoU is designed to foster mutual growth and benefit of both the institutions. By combining CZU’s expertise in environmental science and public health with SMA’s local knowledge and medical expertise, both parties are well-positioned to make significant contributions to humanitarian fields.
This partnership aligns with the goals of the Czech Republic's ongoing humanitarian support in Syria, extending the reach of vital resources and insights into public health challenges facing the region.
The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus supports this initiative, which represents a commitment to science-based solutions for global health challenges.
