Czech Embassy Receives Donation of Czech Books

On October 20, 2024, the Embassy of the Czech Republic Damascus held a handover ceremony for a significant donation of Czech books. These books, originating from a private library left in Damascus by the late Mrs. Jana Homsiová (née Cheníčková), were generously given to the Embassy by her husband.

Mrs. Homsiová, originally from the village of Stříbrná near Sokolov, had worked as a teacher before marrying. She fell in love with a Syrian student studying in Brno, and upon his graduation, she joined him in Syria, where she made her home.

Her husband, Ing. Monzer Al Homsi, struggled with the profound loss of his beloved wife. Despite the language barrier with the Czech books left to him, he continued to foster connections with other Czechs and maintained a close relationship with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus. Wishing to see these books appreciated and utilized, Mr. Al Homsi decided to donate them to the Embassy.

During the handover, Mr. Roman Masařík, Chargé d'affaires at the Embassy, expressed gratitude to Mr. Al Homsi, promising that the Embassy would find an appropriate place and purpose for the donated books.

the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus often serves as a cultural hub and meeting place for the Czech community in Syria, who see it as a "second home." Many Czech women, having met Syrian students while studying in former Czechoslovakia, moved to Syria and cherish the opportunity to visit the Embassy’s library, where they can browse and borrow books for themselves and their families. This access to Czech literature is vital to these families, helping them preserve the Czech language and culture for their children and grandchildren, with a strong emphasis on Czech fairy tale books.

The Embassy regularly welcomes Czech compatriots who visit after years of residence in Syria, as well as those who come more frequently. Each visit provides a meaningful occasion to meet with the consul and discuss life over coffee or tea. For the Embassy staff, these exchanges are invaluable for learning about local life in Syria's distant regions, offering insights that they can later share with others.

Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Jana Homsiová and her husband, Mr. Monzer Al Homsi, the Embassy’s library now boasts an expanded collection of Czech literature, including books for both children and adults, preserving a vital cultural connection for the Czech community in Syria.
