
Czech Government Humanitarian Aid to Syria

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus is pleased to announce the signing of a two significant contracts to provide a financial tied donation as part of the humanitarian aid program funded by the Czech government. This crucial initiative aims to improve the living conditions of the Syrian people and support sustainable development and population stability in the region.
The contract signing ceremony was on 13 June 2024 and attended by prominent representatives from both the Czech and Syrian sides. Mr. Petr Kašička, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus, and Mr. Tomáš Chlopčík, Head of the Development Cooperation Department and the Commercial and Economic Counsellor, represented the Czech Republic and from the Syrian side, the event was attended by the Minister of Water Resources, Eng. Hussein Makhlouf and his deputy, the General Manager of the Damascus Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DAWSSA), representatives of the companies involved in the project, and several technicians.
Humanitarian Aid Efforts and Projects
The Syrian side expressed their deep gratitude for the continuous humanitarian aid provided by the Czech Republic, particularly during the war period. They acknowledged the significant impact of these programs on improving the living conditions in the beneficiary areas and supporting the return of displaced residents to their homes.
1. Douma City Water Treatment Plant Project
In Douma, a city in the Damascus countryside with a population of over 400,000 people, a major project has been initiated to construct a drinking water plant with a capacity of 10M³/H. The project includes the installation of nine drinking outlets and the development of a water network extending approximately 2,500 meters. The total value of this project is CZK 8,592,469, roughly 351,000 EUR. This initiative is expected to greatly enhance access to clean drinking water for the residents of Douma, addressing a critical need in the community.
2. Shebaa City Water Treatment Plant Project
Similarly, in the town of Shabaa in the Mleiha area of the Damascus countryside, another important project is underway. This involves the construction of a drinking water treatment plant with a capacity of 10M³/H, featuring multiple drinking outlets and a network of about 2,000 meters. This project aims to benefit approximately 50,000 people. Additionally, a solar power plant has been established to supply energy to the drinking water desalination plant, ensuring a sustainable and reliable power source. The total value of this project is CZK 9,731,380, approximately 400,000 EUR.
Impact and Goals
These projects in Douma and Shabaa with three other similar old projects in 2021,2022 and 2023 are crucial in supporting the populations of cities that have experienced significant displacement. By providing access to clean drinking water and sustainable energy sources, these initiatives are directly contributing to the improvement of living conditions and supporting the return of displaced persons to their homes. This aligns with the Czech Republic's goals of fostering sustainable development and population stability in Syria.
