Czech Aid 2024: Water Diplomacy

On June 27, 2024, the ceremonial signing of two contracts between the Czech implementing companies and the Damascus Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DAWSSA) for the construction of a drinking water treatment plant and its distribution took place in Damascus. It is a significant step towards improving the living conditions of the Syrian population. The treaties follow the program of the Czech Government regarding the recovery of the Middle East.

DAWSSA

Following the signing of the initial contracts between the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus, representing the Czech Government, and the Damascus Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DAWSSA), a tender was announced to implement these vital projects. Czech companies with expertise in this field participated in the tender process, and the winners of the tender are two renowned Czech firms: Vodní zdroje Ekonomitor spol. s.r.o. and G-servis Praha spol. s r.o.

Vodní zdroje Ekonomitor spol. s.r.o. was selected to execute the drinking water treatment plant project in the town of Shebaa, while G-servis Praha spol. s r.o.was entrusted with the implementation of a similar project in the city of Douma. Both companies have demonstrated substantial experience working within Syrian territory, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the challenges of these projects. 

The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Roman Masarik, the new Charge d'affaires of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus, along with representatives of two Czech companies. The contracts were signed by the Director of Damascus Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DAWSSA). Several specialists of DAWSSA also participated in the event.

The Syrian representatives expressed their profound gratitude for the continuous humanitarian aid provided by the Czech Republic, particularly during the war period. This aid has significantly benefited Syria and the targeted areas, contributing to the Czech Republic's goals of improving the humanitarian situation and supporting sustainable development and population stability.

 

1. Douma Water Treatment Plant Project

In Douma, a city in the Damascus countryside with a population of over 400,000, a drinking water treatment plant with a capacity of 10 m³/hour is being implemented. This plant will feature nine drinking outlets and a network extending approximately 2,500 meters. The total value of this project is approximately 351,000 EUR. This initiative is set to provide much-needed access to clean drinking water, significantly enhancing the quality of life for Douma's residents.

2. Shebaa Water Treatment Plant Project

A similar project is underway in the town of Shebaa in the Maliha area, also in the Damascus countryside. This project involves constructing a drinking water treatment plant with a capacity of 10 m³/hour, complete with drinking outlets and a network approximately 2,000 meters long, aiming to benefit 50,000 people. Additionally, a solar power plant has been established to supply energy to the water desalination plant. The total value of this project is approximately 400,000 EUR. This initiative not only provides clean drinking water but also promotes the use of sustainable energy.

Both Czech companies expressed their appreciation to the representatives of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus for the opportunity to work on these projects. They highlighted that engaging in such challenging environments offers invaluable experience and opens new markets for Czech companies.

These projects are part of a wider effort to help cities heavily affected by displacement, which aims to improve living conditions and support the return of residents to their homes. The Czech Republic's commitment to humanitarian aid and sustainable development in Syria continues to have a significant impact, fostering stability and hope for the future.
