Opening of the exhibition of illustrations by Martin Velíšek in Christiania

In the gallery Gallopperiet in the alternative quarter Christiania in Copenhagen, the exhibition of illustrations by Martin Velíšek to the Czech translation of Greenlandic myths and legends by Knud Rasmussen, was opened 6 April 2013 under the name Greenlandic Myths Meet Christiania Tall Tales.

Together with the Czech illustrations there were also presented pictures of Greenlandic houses by Jane Lytthans (a resident of Christiania) and five ceramic artefacts by Helene Jørgensen (Greenlandic resident of Christiania). The Greenlandic-Danish duo Niels Kuitse & Robert Haasch was playing at the opening.

The Czech Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka launched the exhibition with his opening speech. Gallery organizer Ingrid Borum welcomed the presented artists. Afterwards the author and former resident of Christiania Per Šmidl and the cultural worker of the Czech Embassy in Copenhagen Heda Mikulicová read to the audience one story from Rasmussen´s book in Danish and in Czech.

Approximately 150 guests including three ambassadors and other diplomatic representatives and friends of Czech and Greenlandic culture took part in the opening. The visitors were invited to taste Czech draught beer Bohemia Regent from Třeboň, which was a sponsor present from Kim Normann, the owner of the pub Café Švejk in Frederiksberg.

An article about the exhibition was published in the daily Politiken. Ambassador Z. Lyčka also gave an interview to the Greenlandic daily daily Sermitsiaq.
