Two highest representatives of the Czech Republic, President Milos Zeman and Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, visiting New York at the occasion of the 70th UN General Assembly, made a stop at the 9/11 National Memorial & Museum to pay respect to the two victims of Czech origin, who perished in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.
Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and his delegation were welcomed by Consul General Martin Dvorak, together with the director of the 9/11 Museum Ms. Alice M. Greenwald. After receiving basic information about the Museum and its history the delegation laid the national tricolored wreath to the so-called "Survivor Tree" - a tree whose charred trunk was found in the ruins of the WTC and later after the "resurrection" was planted back among other trees. The Prime Minister completed his visit to the Memorial by laying a symbolic white rose decorated with Czech flag next to the names of two Czech victims of the attack Alena Sešínová and Luke Rambousek.
President Milos Zeman arrived to the Memorial later in the day. He was welcomed by the Consul General Martin Dvořák, who was at this time accompanied by the President and CEO of National 9/11 Memorial & Museum Mr. Joseph C. Daniels, who also provided the President with a brief explanation of the history of the Memorial. The President met with Michal and Martin Rambousek by the engraved name of their son and brother Lukas Rambousek. The Rambousek family was joined by FDNY veterans Tommy Dalto (ladder 325) and Joseph R. Galasso (ladder 212), who personally knew Lukas Rambousek. On September 9, 2001 Mr Galasso was on active duty at the site of the tragedy in New York. Another participant of the meeting was the highest-ranking uniformed firefighter in New York Fire Department, James E. Leonard (Chief of Department of FDNY). President Zeman presented him with an English version of Czech fire prayers and several gifts including a commemorative statue of Saint Florian, the saint patron of firefighters. Then, Mr. President and his delegation put a white calla lily flower with a black ribbon next to name of Luke Rambousek. Subsequently, the entire delegation also moved to the name of Alena Sesinova, where the President also paid respect by laying another white calla lily flower with a black ribbon to her name beside a little Czech flag.
The presence of two top representatives of the Czech Republic in a place so crucial for the USA serves as yet another expression of the fact that the Czech Republic shares the same values of the Western work with the US same values and is ready, together with other allies to defend them.
