Concert "Music from the Abyss": Commemorating the Anniversary of Concentration Camps Liberation

On March 25, the event "Music from the Abyss" took place in the Grand Hall of the Bohemian National Hall. Through compositions by Jewish composers from Theresienstadt, the event commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps during World War II. The event was organized by the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York in collaboration with the American Jewish Committee Westchester/Fairfield, Elysium – Between Two Continents, and the Lahr von Leitis Academy & Archive.

The classical music concert commemorated the anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps during World War II. The event was opened with remarks from Consul General Arnošt Kareš, who noted that even 80 years after the war, antisemitism has not been fully eradicated. In a similar spirit, AJC representative Beth Mehlman welcomed the audience. Lastly, Michael Lahr von Leitis, Executive Director of Elysium, introduced the artistic concept of the event. The stage featured performances from soprano Jeannie Im, pianists Gabriel Cassagnes and Dan Franklin Smith, oboist Adam Leites, tenor Michael Protacio, and cellist Tamar Sagiv.

The concert featured music by composers who were victims of the Holocaust and imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Despite deteriorating living conditions and the constant fear of terror and death, many artists remained creative. Their art helped them endure daily suffering and provided hope and solace to their fellow prisoners. Many Jewish artists were deported to Theresienstadt, including Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Zigmund Schul, James Simon, and Viktor Ullmann. They continued composing and performing on instruments they managed to bring or found there. Before being transformed into a camp in November 1941, Terezín had served as a military fortress. Many of the works composed in the camp have been preserved, allowing them to be remembered and honored on this occasion.
