A delegation of Czech academic researchers successfully completed an energy mission to the United States in the first week of December, focusing on green energy solutions. Representatives of the Czech Technical University in Prague, University of West Bohemia and Czech Academy of Sciences presented their expertise in building energy efficiency, hydrogen technologies, and renewable energy systems across three different states: Illinois, Michigan and Indiana. These discussions highlighted opportunities for international collaboration in tackling sustainability challenges and the approaches to decarbonization.
The delegation began its mission in Illinois, visiting several prestigious institutions. A significant highlight was a tour to Fermilab, one of the most prestigious scientific centers in the world, which is dedicated to pioneering research in particle physics. The delegation also visited the Illinois Institute of Technology, including its Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (WISER), known for advancing sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, they engaged in fruitful discussion with colleagues from the Energy Resources Center at University of Illinois Chicago, which focuses on optimizing energy systems. Furthermore, the mission involved discussions with corporate leaders at Invenergy, a renewable energy giant, and BESI USA, a company specializing in innovative solutions for waste, water and energy. BESI USA also offers internships opportunities for university students, providing valuable hands-on experience. Another inspiring stop included mHUB, a technology incubator fostering start-up growth.
In Michigan, the delegation visited the University of Michigan, where they engaged with experts from the Institute for Energy Solutions and MI Hydrogen initiative, discussing innovative hydrogen and nuclear technologies. They also visited Kettering University, presenting their current research and exploring opportunities for future collaboration. Additionally, they engaged with representatives from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to gain insights into Michigan´s clean energy landscape and ongoing trends in the industry and state policies.
In Indiana, the delegation met with representatives from the Northwest Indiana Forum, Valparaiso University and Purdue University Northwest and discussed the similarities of both economies with strong manufacturing sectors with a focus on automotive, machinery and industrial goods. The final stop was at the University of Notre Dame, further broadening the scope of potential academic and research collaboration across the Great Lakes region.
All these engagements are paving the way for impactful partnerships between Czech academia and U.S. institutions, ensuring that the mission serves as a platform for cooperation in innovative research and shared progress in green energy technologies.
