Remembering 200 years since the birth of K.H.Borovský

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago in cooperation with the T.G.Masaryk Czech school celebrated the 200 year anniversary since the birth of Karel Havlicek Borovský at his monument in Chicago on October 30th.

The Czech community in Chicago was historically important already in the 19th century, and in 1909 Karel Havlicek Monument Association ordered a bronze statue by the sculptor Josef Strachovský, a copy of the original standing in Kutna Hora.

The monument consisting of a bronze statue and stone with Czech and English inscriptions was unveiled on July 30, 1911 in Douglas Park. After the Czechs moved out of the area, the statue was moved at the expense of the Czech community to its current location, on the shores of Lake Michigan in the park area of the Museum Campus.

Consul Ondřej Pometlo welcomed the participants and, after a live performance of the Czech and American anthems, he laid flowers and briefly talked about the importance and legacy of K. H. Borovský.

Afterwards students of the Czech school wearing historical costumes presented a total of eight epigrams. The program ended with Czech songs performed by  the United Moravian Societies and Czech Catholic Mission singers.
