Commemoration of Lidice in Crest Hill

On June 9, 2019 the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, Mr. Jaroslav Kantůrek, attended the annual memorial event at the memorial Victims of Lidice Tragedy at Lidice Memorial Park in Crest Hill, Illinois.
This event is traditionally organized by the Czechoslovak American Congress in cooperation with the State of Illinois Senate, Mayor of Crest Hill and other compatriot associations.
The memorial in Crest Hill, Illinois, is unique in being the first place in the world where the tragedy of the village of Lidice was commemorated by renaming a part of the village by this name. President E. Beneš also personally attended the 1943 memorial service.
After the speeches and the laying of wreaths there was a short performance by the Choir of the United Moravian Societies. After that the students of Czech TGM School in Chicago read a part of the correspondence with the Suchanek sisters of Lidice.
Representatives of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago handed over promotional materials about the Lidice International Children's Art Exhibition as well as other publications dedicated to the Lidice Memorial to the Library at Crest Hill.
