The Czech Stall at the Multicultural Festival in Canberra

Between the 15th and the 17th of February 2019, one of the largest social events of the year took place in Australia’s capital – the Multicultural Festival. This year, just like years gone by, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra also had its own stall within the aptly-named European Village, which was opened by the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Chris Steel.

The theme of the stall was chosen in order to introduce visitors to some Czech products that they were already very familiar with from their day-to-day lives, and yet it is not widely known that they are originally from the Czech Republic. For that reason, a small exhibition was on display at the stand, consisting of Škoda car models, Czech beer and crystal, and some beloved Australian sweets, which are made in the Czech Republic closely based on Fidorky. Given the massive participation in the festival as a whole, many people stopped by the stand, where as well as being able to soak up the display of Czech products, they could also receive information from Embassy staff about opportunities available to study in the Czech Republic and tourism. This was all supported by informational booklets covering everything from travel, to study opportunities (WHS program or StudyInPrague).

The festival was made possible by the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Chris Steel, who kicked off the whole festival and later declared the European Village open by taking a group photo with all of the Ambassadors from the countries that had their own stand in the village – a photo which Ambassador Tomáš Dub was a part of.
