Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová in Melbourne

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra is pleased to announce the upcoming production of Leoš Janáček’s opera Káťa Kabanová, presented by Victorian Opera in collaboration with the ANAM Orchestra at the historic Palais Theatre in St Kilda.

Performance dates:
Tuesday, 14 October 2025, 7:30 pm
Thursday, 16 October 2025, 7:30 pm

Seating capacity: 1,500

The opera will be performed in Czech with English surtitles, offering a unique opportunity for the Czech community as well as the wider Australian public to experience Leoš Janáček’s masterpiece in its authentic form.

The role of Katya will be sung by soprano Desiree Frahn, under the direction of Heather Fairbairn and the baton of conductor Finnegan Downie Dear. The orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the ANAM Orchestra.

As part of this cultural project, there will also be a discussion at Domov Gallery with Victorian Opera’s Artistic Director Stuart Maunder AM on the theme “Janáček and Katya”, taking place on 12 September 2025. The event will begin with a glass of champagne, and each participant will take home a traditional Czech gingerbread as a souvenir.
