Foreign Minister Lipavský in Canberra

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr Jan Lipavský, has commenced his five-day working visit to Australia. The Minister landed in Canberra, where he will have a full programme of official business. He will also visit Sydney, from where he will head to Japan. This is the first official visit by a Czech Foreign Minister to Australia in 20 years. The delegation is accompanied by a large business mission.

During his three-day visit to the Australian capital, the Minister will meet with prominent Australian officials, including Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Home Affairs Minister Claire O'Neil, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee Shayne Neumann, Governor-General David Hurley, selected members of both Houses of Parliament, and the Chairman of the Australian Parliamentary Friends of the Czech Republic Group, Luke Gosling.

As part of a planned meeting with the Czech community, a formal reception was held on Sunday 25 February 2024 at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra, which was associated with the opening of an exhibition of young Czech artists called "New Era". Ambassador Jana Tyrer then officially welcomed all the guests and introduced the Minister to the Czech community living in Canberra and its surroundings. Following the speech of the Minister, who, among other things, appreciated the Czech community organisation "Beseda" and the Czech School for their support of Czech traditions, culture, and language abroad, he also acknowledged the courage and effort of those who relocated abroad. Subsequently, Mrs. Daniela Wadey, a Czech School instructor, presented the Minister with drawings by children with Czech-Australian themes.

The exhibition of young Czech artists was then presented by the director of the Melbourne FIN Gallery, Ms Dominika Kúthová.

The reception was attended by more than 100 guests who enjoyed traditional Czech refreshments and a surprise of homemade Moravian cakes. Thank you all for an enjoyable evening!
