On Friday, 15 August 2025, a solemn Last Post Ceremony was held in Canberra to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day. With the participation of the diplomatic corps, war veterans, and the public, the memory of the fallen was also honoured by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Australia, Her Excellency Jana Tyrer.
The ceremony, which took place in the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial, recalled the moment in 1945 when the Second World War ended in the Pacific. For Australia, this day represents the definitive conclusion of the war, which profoundly influenced the course of world history.
The Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Australia, Jana Tyrer, joined the diplomatic corps, war veterans, and members of the public in laying a wreath on behalf of the Czech Republic. This collective act symbolised unity and the determination to honour the memory of the victims, while also expressing the will to strive for the preservation of a peaceful future.
In 2025, the Australian War Memorial is commemorating several key anniversaries, including Victory in Europe Day (8 May) and Victory in the Pacific Day (15 August). These anniversaries are not only an occasion to pay tribute to the fallen, but also an opportunity to reflect more deeply on how important it is to safeguard peace and freedom in the contemporary world.
The commemoration of the 80th anniversary was thus not only a historical remembrance, but also a message for the future. At a time when peace cannot be taken for granted, it remains the shared responsibility of states and citizens alike to protect it and to pass this legacy on to future generations.
