On Wednesday, 19 March 2025, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to the Commonwealth of Australia and non-resident Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Cook Islands, Ms Jana Tyrer, presented her credentials to the representative of King Charles III, His Excellency Sir Tom Marsters. The official ceremony took place on the island of Rarotonga.
In her address, the Ambassador highlighted the long-standing friendly relations between the Czech Republic and the Cook Islands, and underscored the values shared by both nations – democracy, freedom, tolerance, and justice. She also expressed appreciation for the shared commitment to contributing to international peace, security, and prosperity, grounded in respect for the rules-based multilateral system and the protection of human rights. “As two smaller countries with open economies, dependent on trade with our neighbours and with partners further afield for our prosperity, we also have a joint interest in supporting the rules-based multilateral system, in ensuring peace and security and promoting human rights,” she noted in her speech.
The Letters of Credence, issued by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, were formally handed over to the Representative of the British Monarch, thereby officially appointing Ms Jana Tyrer as the non-resident Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Cook Islands.
As part of her programme, the Ambassador held bilateral talks with the Cook Islands’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Hon. Mr Tingika Elikana, and the Ministry’s Secretary, Ms Tepaeru Herrmann. The main topics of discussion included the positions of both countries on current global affairs, with an emphasis on upholding the international rules-based order. Opportunities to expand cooperation in the areas of trade, digital security, cyber and climate resilience, and education were also explored.
Other key meetings included discussions with Her Excellency Phoebe Smith, Australian High Commissioner to the Cook Islands, as well as representatives from the New Zealand High Commission. The dialogue focused on regional challenges and consular assistance for Czech citizens.
The official visit marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in areas of strategic importance to both countries.
