Ambassador Tomáš Dub made a trip to the Kingdom of Tonga in order to hand over his Letters of Credence and assume his function as non-resident ambassador. During his trip, he met with many of the significant officials from the country. As part of each meeting, he presented the Czech Republic with a focus on areas where bilateral relationships between the two countries could be further developed and on opportunities for economic collaboration.
As an introductory meeting, the ambassador attended a welcome reception with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mahe Tupouniua, who expressed his thanks for cooperation on a multi-lateral level to date and expressed particular interest in our methods of educating diplomats, on account of Tonga’s intention to open a new representative office in Geneva, which will be the first on the European mainland. The area of energy was also thoroughly discussed. The Secretary raised the question as to whether Czech engineers, given their exceptional reputation, would be able to solve the problem of solar panels getting damaged during tropical cyclones.
The official and very formal handing over of credentials was followed by a half-an-hour long discussion with King Tupou VI in a very friendly and informal atmosphere, where the King expressed his interest in the Czech Republic and supported two areas of potential collaboration – trade and education. In particular he highlighted medical care and the quality of Czech dentists.
The Tongan premier Samuel Akilisi Pohiva dealt with similar issues, expressing interest in collaborating with the Czech Republic, especially in the areas of education and medical care.
During the meeting with the Tonga Chamber of Commerce, the Czech ambassador mentioned Czech production of ultra-light and small aircraft and mobile airports. The mention of mobile airports was of particular interest in light of the fact that the Kingdom is spread across 177 islands (36 inhabited). Mobile airports could aid in ensuring emergency transport in the case of a national disaster. Another topic discussed was the Czech software Avast and Zoner, which could eventually be made available for educative purposes in primary schools.
At the end of his trip the Ambassador took part in an official lunch with the Secretary for Foreign Affairs Mahe Tupouniua, after which he also met with the Minister for Health Dr. Saia Piukala who would welcome cooperation in educating doctors or potential scholarships.
