Termination of the Czech permanent residency
30.06.2023 / 05:21 | Aktualizováno: 03.07.2023 / 07:11
A citizen of the Czech Republic who has decided to terminate their permanent residence in the territory of the Czech Republic must notify the relevant local authority of their place of permanent residence in the Czech Republic (the notification office) in writing.
Termination of permanent residence in the Czech Republic does not affect Czech citizenship or possession of a Czech passport. However, the termination of permanent residence may affect (your) contracts signed in the Czech Republic, e.g. supplementary pension schemes, life insurance, etc. We, therefore, recommend that you check with the relevant institutions whether the termination of your permanent residence in the Czech Republic has any impact on such contracts.
Who can make a submission
- - Citizens of the Czech Republic over 15 years of age; or
- - legal representative or foster parent of a citizen under 15 years of age; or
- - legal representative of a citizen deprived of legal capacity; or
- - legal representative for a citizen whose legal capacity has been restricted by a court decision so that they cannot cease permanent residence in the Czech Republic.
Method of submission
- - in person, at the notification office relevant to the place of permanent residence (it is necessary to present an identity card or passport); or
- - in paper form (e.g. via post) - the notification must bear the citizen's officially certified signature; or
- - in the form of a data message, which must be accompanied by a verified electronic signature; or
- - via a data box.
Residents living in the ACT can also submit a notice of termination of permanent residence through the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra.
To do so, you must:
- - Present a valid ID card or passport; and
- - fill in and/or sign a pre-filled notice of termination of permanent residence, witnessed by an embassy official; and
- - when applying on someone's behalf, provide proof of eligibility with the appropriate supporting evidence (e.g. legal guardian - produce a birth certificate); and
- - pay the administrative fee in accordance with the current fees; and
- - surrender the Czech identity card If the ID shows the permanent address.
The Embassy forwards the notification to the appropriate authority in the Czech Republic relevant to the permanent residence of the applicant.
Permanent residence in the Czech Republic will be terminated on the date of delivery of the notification of termination of permanent residence to the reporting office. The relevant form is available for download under this article.
Implications for the ownership of an identity card (Občanský Průkaz)
A citizen is obliged to surrender their ID card to the municipal authority of the municipality with extended jurisdiction relevant to the place of permanent residence within 15 working days after the end of their permanent residence in the Czech Republic. When an ID-holder is outside of the Czech Republic, they may surrender the ID at the embassy.
A citizen of the Czech Republic may apply for a new identity card that does not include the address of permanent residence in the territory of the Czech Republic. An application for a new identity card cannot be submitted through the embassy. A new identity card can only be applied for in the Czech Republic.
