How to proceed if you have an Australian marriage certificate and intend to apply for registration in the Czech registry office and for a Czech marriage certificate.
The most important supporting material for the registration of a matrimonial event in the Czech civil registry that occurred in Australia is the Australian marriage certificate.
The applicant for the registration of a matrimonial event should generally be a Czech citizen, as during the application process it is necessary to sign and submit, for example, a declaration of citizenship. The submitted Australian marriage certificate must first be certified with an apostille and then officially translated into Czech, including the apostille. Translations made by the applicant cannot be accepted. A translator from the list maintained by our Embassy can be contacted to make the translation.

Mandatory documents:
- Australian marriage certificate certified by apostille; and
- translation of the marriage certificate including the apostille; and
- valid Czech ID card OR valid passport of both the couple; and
- Copies of birth certificates for all applicants; if both partners are Czech citizens, Czech birth certificates for both partners are required.; and
- Czech court decision on the divorce of a previous marriage with a legal force clause or a Czech marriage certificate of a previous marriage with the divorce marked; and
- Czech death certificate of the former spouse in the case of a widow/widower; and
- if the Czech citizen has acquired other citizenship, a relevant document confirming this (e.g. a foreign passport) must be presented.
All documents must be submitted as originals. All documents except the Australian marriage certificate will be returned to you immediately upon receipt of your application. The presence of both partners at the time of application may be waived if the principal applicant submits the other partner's documents and forms (including the Marriage Record) signed by the other partner. The principal applicant is responsible for the signature of their partner on the Marriage Record.
You will also need to complete the forms below, which you can fill out in advance to speed up the application process:
Forms to be completed by the applicant (spouse) who is a Czech citizen:
- Consent to the processing of personal data
- Declaration of citizenship
- Application for registration of marriage
Form to be filled in by the wife, who is requesting registration of her surname in the male form (without -ová):
- Application for registration of surname in the marriage register in the male form
Note: Should a change of surname after the marriage applies, it is recommended to apply for a current Proof of Czech Citizenship at the same time as registering the marriage. Due to the invalidation of the passport 3 months after the registration of the marriage, the Certificate of Czech Citizenship (no older than 1 year) will be required for the subsequent application for a passport.
