Minister Lipavský praised Romania's role in dealing with the humanitarian consequences of the Russian aggression and its assistance in the export of Ukrainian grain. During the visit of his Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu to Prague on 18 August, they also discussed the security situation in Europe. It was the first visit by a Romanian head of diplomacy to our country in nine years.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed current foreign policy issues in the context of the Russian war in Ukraine and the security situation in Europe. They also discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations following the retreat of the pandemic. Romania is the Czech Republic's most important economic partner in the Southeast European region. Thanks to traditionally good relations, a large number of Czech companies and investors operate in Romania.
Ministers agreed that the EU needs to be ready to respond to further possible escalations by Russia. "Russian aggression affects us all, so we must be ready to react quickly and be flexible so that we as Europe can adapt to the new reality. The Czech Republic has been a supporter of sanctions and clearly defined rules from the beginning and we want to continue this effort," Lipavský said.
In the context of EU enlargement, the diplomatic chiefs also spoke about the Republic of Moldova. Romania's close relationship with Moldova makes Romania's insight into the issue beneficial for the Czech Republic.
Minister Lipavský supported Romania's accession to Schengen. The Czech EU Presidency wants to make progress on this issue. During the meeting, the ministers also discussed cooperation within NATO and, in particular, the common interests of the B9 group in strengthening the eastern wing of the Alliance, as well as support for compatriot communities.
