Business Delegation Strengthens Czech-Swiss Cooperation in Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals

As part of the official state visit of Czech President Petr Pavel to Switzerland, a business delegation consisting of representatives from Czech companies, clusters, and research organizations was organized. The delegation's primary goal was to deepen cooperation between the Czech Republic and Switzerland in biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry, strengthen bilateral trade relations, and support innovation and research.

The delegation’s program began with the Swiss-Czech Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Business Forum held at ETH Zürich, one of the world’s most prestigious universities. The forum was inaugurated by Czech President Petr Pavel and the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd. Other key participants included SGE President Ruth Metzler-Arnold, Chairman of economiesuisse Christoph Mäder, and Vice-President of the Czech Chamber of Commerce Jana Havrdová. The forum participants discussed opportunities for collaboration in research, innovation, and trade.

"Switzerland is an important export destination for us. Just last year, Czech companies exported goods worth over 83 billion CZK to Switzerland. The country is also a significant investor in the Czech Republic, and vice versa, with more Czech firms starting to establish themselves in Switzerland. We collaborate in modern and innovative fields such as telecommunications, digital technology, and healthcare. I am pleased to inaugurate the Swiss-Czech pharmaceutical and biotechnology forum. Our security and prosperity must always start with and be based on thorough research and Innovation," said President Petr Pavel.

The delegation also visited Biozentrum Basel at the University of Basel, where they explored the latest trends in science and research. A visit to Roche, the world's largest biotechnology company, provided insights into the modern biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry and the potential for collaboration in developing new medicines.

Meetings with Czech experts working at ETH Zürich and other Swiss institutions were inspiring, sparking ideas for future joint projects. The delegation also had the opportunity to meet with President Petr Pavel at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bern, where they discussed support for Czech science, biotechnology, and the pharmaceutical sector.

The organization and successful execution of the delegation's program were made possible by the valuable assistance and cooperation of partners, including the Czech Chamber of Commerce, the Office of the President of the Czech Republic, economiesuisse, Switzerland Global Enterprise, CometX, Biozentrum Basel, biotechnology company Roche, ETH Zürich, the honorary consulates of the Czech Republic in Basel, Zurich, and Lausanne, and the SEC Chamber of Commerce Switzerland-Central Europe.

"The Swiss market offers many opportunities for Czech exporters, but it also has high standards for quality, costs, and precision. With careful preparation, thorough financial planning, and the ability to adapt to local conditions, Czech companies can successfully enter this prestigious market and establish a long-term presence," stated Vaclav Sulista, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Basel.

Those interested in expanding into Switzerland are advised to consult with the Czech Embassy in Bern or the Czech honorary consulates in Zurich, Basel, or Lausanne, which can provide valuable advice and support.

The business mission fostered new contacts, encouraged cooperation, and opened doors for further development of Czech-Swiss relations in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Participants appreciated the opportunity to meet with leading experts, visit key institutions, and share experiences and knowledge.

We extend our gratitude to all partners and institutions that contributed to the organization of this significant event and facilitated valuable meetings.
