First-ever Competition in Czech language at the Czech Embassy in Beijing

On Thursday, 17 October 2024, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing held the first-ever Czech Language Competition for students of the Czech language.
The competition aims to promote interest in studying the Czech language and introduces Czech culture to the Chinese public.

The first edition was open to eighteen students of Bohemistics from nine Chinese universities. In their speeches, the contestants spoke on one of four pre-selected topics for five minutes before the jury of Czech and Chinese teachers. The Deputy Ambassador Martin Hošek took the jury chairman's role.

The topics for this year were as follows:

What I enjoy about studying Czech

My favourite book by Franz Kafka

The beauty of the Czech Republic

What I do at the weekend

The high knowledge of the Czech language was evident in the individual speeches, which were able to enthuse and entertain the jury. All contestants were rewarded with valuable prizes for their performances. After the announcement of the results, the participants had the opportunity to taste an authentic Czech lunch - schnitzels with potato salad, all in the scenery of the Embassy's garden.

The study of Bohemistics is a non-traditional discipline in China, which makes us appreciate all the contestants' efforts and diligence in studying the Czech language even more.

Congratulations to all the contestants, and thank you for your participation!
