Europe Day celebrations in Beijing: a celebration of cultural diversity as well as 50 years of EU-China relations

On 6 May, the Czech Embassy in Beijing took part in the annual Europe Day celebrations, held at the EU Delegation’s premises. The event marked both Europe Day and the 50th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations, welcoming over 1,000 guests from Chinese authorities, the diplomatic corps, and partner institutions. Our embassy participated not only by presenting the Czech booth, but also by performing a musical performance with a selection of Czech classical music pieces.

As part of the cultural showcase organised by the EU Delegation, our embassy presented a vibrant Czech booth, which was staffed by our diplomats. Visitors had the chance to sample traditional refreshments, including Czech beer available for purchase on Chinese online platforms. Among the visual attractions was the beloved Czech cartoon character Krtek, who drew interest from both children and adults.

The official programme was opened by EU Ambassador to China Jorge Toledo, who welcomed Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying. In his remarks, Ambassador Toledo highlighted the evolution of EU-China ties over the past five decades, calling it “one of the most important and multifaceted bilateral relations in the world.” He stressed the importance of rebalancing the relationship and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to peace, support for Ukraine, international cooperation, and a rules-based global order.
