Czech ecological film screened in Baku on Earth Day

The Czech Embassy presented the ecological documentary film „Places of Life“ by Jakub Skalický, with Azerbaijani subtitles, at the Landmark Baku Cine Club on the occasion of the Earth Day on 22 April 2022. The screening took place as a follow-up event to the international EKOFILM festival, organized annually under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic. Most of the audience consisted of students of the Baku State University Faculty of Biology which has maintained productive cooperation with Czech academic partners over the last 55 years.

At specific examples from the Czech Republic, „Places of Life“ tells a story of landscape recovery after systematic exploitation by coal mining which helped to turn the country into one of the most economically developed parts of Europe. In a post-coal Europe, those Czech regions that were most dramatically transformed by coal extraction struggle to transform into habitable places. This is an environmental issue as much as it is a socioeconomic one.
