This April, the staff of the Czech Embassy in Baku took part in the – we can already say traditional - tree planting in the Haftoni forestry area near Hirkan National Park. The event was organized in cooperation of the Embassy with the regional office of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the management of Hirkan National Park and the Lankaran City Council. The voluntary work, which was also attended by employees of the local forestry center and students and staff of Lankaran State University, was opened with an introductory speech on the importance of protection of environment and nature by Czech Ambassador Mr. Milan Sedláček, who also planted the first tree. In his address, the representative of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and author of natural science publications Mr. Bakhtiar Hüseynov recalled the mutual long-term cooperation.
This year we planted about a hundred young trees of Parrotia persica, last April one hundred and eighty. Parrotia is a native and rare species of the local mountains, in Azerbaijan it is called the iron tree.
The Lankaran region in the south of Azerbaijan is very active in protecting its natural resources. The local mountains are home to the Persian leopard, one of the world's rarest felines. Zoologists from Charles University visits area as part of research cooperation with Azerbaijani universities, and there is a project of marking tourist routes supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The mutual ecological cooperation is long-term, the growing forest nursery is already called "Azerbaijani-Czech Friendship Park".
The year 2024 is an important year for Azerbaijan in terms of environmental protection; in November, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). This year has been declared the country's "Green World Solidarity Year".
