President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Mrs. Markéta Pekarová Adamová visited Baku

On February 1 and 2, 2024, President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Mrs. Markéta Pekarová Adamová visited Baku. She arrived at the head of an official parliamentary delegation. The trip, which took place at the invitation of Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, the Chairwoman of the Azerbaijani Parliament - Milli Majlis contributed to the strengthening of friendly relations between Czechia and Azerbaijan. Mrs. Pekarova Adamova was also received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov. Beyond the bilateral issues, the situation in the region was discussed, and the President Pekarová Adamová conveyed the Czech Republic's unequivocal support for the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the exclusion of violence. The Czech Republic stands for a peaceful and prosperous South Caucasus. In parallel, the accompanying business delegation, a delegation from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and representatives of Czech universities held talks with their Azerbaijani partners.

Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova and President of the Czech Chamber of Deputies Mrs. Markéta Pekarová Adamová praised the friendly relations between the two countries and the successful cooperation developing especially in the fields of economy, energy, education and culture. They also focused on the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In this context, Mrs Pekarová Adamová said that instability in the region favours Russian interests. The subsequent meeting of the members of the working groups on Azerbaijani-Czech inter-parliamentary relations also took place in a very friendly and constructive atmosphere.

During the reception by the Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, the partners touched upon a large number of bilateral and foreign policy issues. Among others, mutual cooperation in the energy sector was highlighted and Mrs. Pekarová Adamová congratulated on the holding of the  UN climate conference COP29 in Baku this year. H. E. Minister Bajramov briefed on developments in relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the situation in the retaken Azerbaijani territories, where the government is investing heavily in the reconstruction and return of displaced citizens.

Parallel to the official part of the delegation's program, the Vice-Rector of Charles University, Dr. Eva Voldřichová Beránková, met with the Rector of the Baku State University, Dr. Elchin Babayev, to deepen inter-university cooperation, as well as with representatives of Lankaran State University and Baku Slavic University. Mr. Martin Pospíšil, Director of the Department of Foreign Economic Policies of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, met with Mr. Sahib Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan, and Mr. Ondřej Velek, Director of the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics also hold interesting meetings with Azerbaijani partners. A number of B2B meetings between Czech companies and their Azerbaijani partners also took place.
