Project in support of equitable education for children of returnees and internally displaced

Czech non-governmental organization People in Need (Člověk v tísni) implemented a project supporting access to education of children. On February 19, 2025, the Ambassador had an opportunity to personally visit the school in Shaqlawa that benefits from this program.  Ambassador learned about activities that are taking place at the Shaqlawa school, he visited training sessions for the parent-teacher association on child protection, met with the school principal, and took a tour to observe the improvements made with the support of CzechAid funding.

Project Details:

  • • Project Name: Provision of Equitable Access to Safe Education for Refugees, Returnees, IDPs, and Host Community Children in Iraq
  • • Project Goal: To ensure that girls and boys, including adolescents (ages 3-18), have access to continuous, inclusive, and gender-responsive education services in crisis-affected communities. PIN's efforts are specifically focused on providing support in the province of Erbil, particularly in the districts of Shaqlawa and Koya.
  • • Funding: Funded by the United Global Fund to ECW and co-funded by CZDA

About the activities of People in Need (PIN):

PIN currently focuses on providing aid in the province of Erbil, specifically in the districts of Shaqlawa and Koya. PIN provides the following activities for the local communities. PIN delivers a range of educational and environmental initiatives, including:

  • • Remedial Education: Providing Kurdish language and Science remedial classes for students.
  • • School Greening Initiatives: Planting trees and greenery, installing a water sprinkler system, and improving the school environment.
  • • Climate Change Awareness: Conducting awareness sessions for parents on climate change.
  • • Climate Resilience Gamification: Piloting interactive climate resilience activities for students.
  • • School Clubs and Play Areas: Establishing and maintaining school clubs and playgrounds to enhance students' learning environments.
  • • Language Support: Offering Kurdish-Sorani language summer courses to strengthen language skills.
  • • Learning and Teaching Materials: Providing essential educational materials to both teachers and students.
  • • Training in Inclusive Education: Training Department of Education (DoE) officials in gender-sensitive and disability-inclusive pedagogies.
  • • Support for the Education System: In coordination with the Ministry of Education – Kurdistan Region of Iraq (MoE-KRI), the project contributed to the distribution of learning materials and textbooks to support the KRI education system.

This comprehensive initiative aims to enhance access to quality education, promote inclusivity, and build resilience among children in Iraq’s crisis-affected communities.
