On 31 March 2017, five Czech Police experts arrived in Baghdad to join in a training programme for Iraqi police recruits, under the framework of the Global Coalition against ISIL.
The training programme, led by the command of a 65-member force of the Italian gendarmerie (Carabinieri) in Baghdad, has been running since 2015 and has already been completed by a total of about 7000 trainees of the Iraqi Federal Police and local police units. The training covers a wide range of police expertise, ranging from forensic investigative methods to defusal of explosive devices and urban riot control.
Along with a group of Spanish colleagues, the Czech police experts are the first international reinforcement to the Italian Carabinieri team, with further contributions of international experts planned in the future to expand the training mission to up to 130 persons.
With its recent successes on the Mosul war front, the military campaign of the Iraqi Armed Forces against ISIL is hopefully nearing its victorious completion. However, the security situation in the territories liberated from ISIL remains precarious. Many local police units in these territories must be rebuilt anew after the endured crisis. This task is considered among those most critical to the preservation and reinforcement of stability in Iraq after the prospective completion of the military campaign against ISIL.
