The port is a strategic national project of Iraq. It has an ambition to become one of the largest ports in the Middle East. Iraq also plans to shorten transportation distance between Asia and Europe, by constructing a new railway and highway corridor throughout Iraq towards Turkey, bypassing the Suez Canal.
