About Al-Kadhimiya Mosque and Temple:
The mosque was built on the site of the Quraysh Cemetery founded by Caliph Al-Mansur together with the so-called "round" city of Baghdad in 762. The cemetery itself is religiously significant, as the seventh imam Musa Al-Kadhim in 799 and (his grandson) the ninth imam Muhammad Al-Jawad in 834 were buried here. The current appearance of the mosque and the temple building reflects reconstructions carried out by the Shah of Iran Ismail I between 1502 and 1524 and the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent after he conquered Baghdad in 1534. Today, the mosque is considered an important architectural monument. It is characterized by two main domes and four large minarets, all covered with gold. The Al-Kadhimiya Mosque is considered one of Iraq's most iconic landmarks.
