H.E. Ambassador Petr Štěpánek met the Minister of Finance Mrs. Taif Sami, on March 26, 2024. The main topics of their meeting were preparation of bilateral agreements and planned visit of the Prime Minister of Iraq to Prague.
The Czech Republic and the Republic of Iraq are preparing new agreement on avoidance of double taxation. The signing of this agreement could take place during the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Iraq to Prague (planned for May 2024). A bilateral aviation agreement could also be signed during this visit.
The Republic of Iraq is our 55th most important export market, and its importance continues to grow. The mutual trade exchange of goods between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Iraq already exceeded 250 mil USD in 2023.
Since 2018, mutual trade relations have been guided by the EU-Iraq Agreement (Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and its Member States and Iraq). In addition, the Czech Republic and Iraq have already concluded an agreement on economic cooperation (signed in Prague in 2012). The overall legal framework supporting mutual trade will not be copleted without concluding (1) an Agreement on the Aavoidance of Double Taxation and (2) an Agreement on the Protection of Investments.
