Under the Czech government medical humanitarian programme MEDEVAC, another two teams of Czech doctors came to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on March 20th till March 31st, 2017 – a team of ophthalmologists from the University Hospital Hradec Kralove and trauma surgeons from the University Hospital Olomouc.
197 Syrian and Jordanian patients were successfully operated in Al Khalidi Hospital and Medical Centre by the team of ophthalmologists, which consisted of Professor M.D. Nada Jiraskova, PhD., M.D. Libor Hejsek, PhD. and a nurse Leona Kvasnickova. This was the highest number of patients who were operated by this team among all four conducted missions of the Czech ophthalmologists to Jordan. On behalf of all these patients who were helped to gain a better sight, the gratitude and meaningfulness of this medical humanitarian programme were the best expressed by a 14 year-old Syrian boy with congenital cataracts and a terrible burn on his face, who woke up after an operation under a general anaesthesia saying with astonishment: “I can see my dad!”
Trauma surgeons M.D. Petr Spiroch and M.D. Jaromir Freiwald, who came to Jordan for the third time, focused not only on urgent injuries but also treated injuries that had not been healed well. Their efforts were supported by work of a physiotherapist Renata Coufalova who rehabilitated and taught the patients how to exercise at home.
The total number of successful operations that were conducted in Palestine Hospital was 17, with around two to three cases per day.
Activities of the Czech government programme MEDEVAC were again at the centre of Jordanian mass media attention. On April 1st, 2017 a report by the Jordanian Roya TV was aired (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vssyMH--ivY) and on the same day an article about these two missions was published in Jordan Times newspaper (electronic version - link: http://www.jordantimes.com/news/local/healing-wounds-conflict-%E2%80%94-czech-medevac-programme-provides-medical-care-syrian-refugees).
