(This article expired 31.01.2017 / 01:00.)

On June 17 to 19, Special Representative of the Secretary General of NATO for Women, Peace and Security, Ms. Mari Skaare, paid visit to Jordan. The purpose of her visit was to get acquainted with the conditions of the training and education of female members of the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) and to express support for the training capacity expansion project, funded through the NATO Trust Fund.

M. Skaare  first visited the headquarters of the JAF  Directorate of Military Women Affairs, where she was received by the Director, BrigGen. Nawal Al-Nsoor.  In the course of their conversation, M. Skaare was acquainted with the history of service of women in the Jordanian Army from modest beginnings, when women could only serve in the Medical Corps, to their current representation in most military branches including Special Forces. Then she had the opportunity to meet with several dozen female officer of JAF and other uniformed forces (police, gendarmerie, civil defense), who shared their experience of service and talked about difficulties and challenges they face in traditional socio-cultural environment.

After a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and talks in the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW,) M. Skaare visited the Training Centre (Centre of Excellence) for JAF servicewomen in Zarqa near Amman. A comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Centre lies in the core of the project to which the Alliance member states and some partners contribute through a NATO-Jordan Trust Fund III. The Centre Commander, Col. Kholoud Al-Hammad, gave a short briefing on its activities and showed M. Skaare the facility whose status no longer meets current standards and needs. Therefore,  the success of Trust Fund financed project will not only ensure satisfactory conditions for training of JAF´s female soldiers and officers, but also the extension of existing curricula and training programs, so that the Centre could serve not only the needs of the Jordanian Armed Forces, but also allow for the preparation of  female members of the military from other countries that are members of NATO partnership formats of Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul  Cooperation  Initiative.
