The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra financially supported a development assistance project titled „Gift of Hearing“, which was realised by the “Less Privileged Ghana Foundation“ from April to August 2018 in Cape Coast Hospital. According to the foundation’s data, more than 10% kids are suffering from some kind of hearing disorder. The goal of the project was thus to build local capacity for early hearing screening and treatment of potential disorders, so that these individuals can live a full-fledged life.
Within the project, a hearing screening machine for the new born babies and an audiometer for children and adults were donated to the Cape Coast Hospital. The head doctor from the ORL Clinic of the Olomouc Hospital in the Czech Republic, Mr. Richard Salzman, was sent in to introduce to almost 40 local doctors the latest trends in the ears surgeries and after that he performed a surgery of an ear drum plastic with the assistance of the local E.N.T. doctors. A team of specialists from the Czech Republic trained the local staff on how to use the donated machines and how to perform the screenings. The Czech team also helped with the first patients to whom hearing aid was set up and donated for free as part of the “Gift of Hearing” project.
As a result of the project, the Cape Coast Hospital can now provide free hearing screenings to all new born babies as well as adults and, in case of discovered disorders, offer necessary treatment. This practice would otherwise not be available.
In addition, the project team visited 3 villages and examined there 258 patients. When needed, ear splashes were done and medication was provided. In 32 cases, hearing aids were donated.
