On Thursday, 21 May 2026, the closing ceremony of the project “Strengthening capacities on border management and prevention of trafficking in human beings in Côte d’Ivoire (BMTHB CI)” took place in Abidjan. The project was funded by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). The Czech side was represented by Deputy Ambassador Nick Ojo Omorodion.
Over 22 months of implementation, the project strengthened Côte d’Ivoire’s capacities in border management, detection of document fraud, and prevention of trafficking in human beings, both at the institutional and operational levels. Czechia, through the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, contributed approximately EUR 1 million to the project. Key results include enhanced skills for more than 133 police officers, particularly in combating document fraud and identity theft, and the handover of 120 portable devices for detecting document fraud. The project also supported four border crossing points through refresher and specialized training sessions and contributed to the creation of 14 regional anti-trafficking prevention cells, including one in Bouna, alongside the training of 164 local actors. Outputs also included a draft law on national borders and support to the National Border Commission of Côte d’Ivoire (CNFCI).
Representatives of key institutions spoke at the ceremony. The project results were presented by Natalija Spunjini, ICMPD Project Manager. On the Ivorian side, Mory Sylla, Technical Adviser for International Cooperation, emphasized that the project represents an important step in the national security strategy and towards more transparent border governance, and that it delivered modern control and monitoring tools as well as broader mobilization against human trafficking. Other speakers representing national partner institutions also welcomed the results achieved.
