SIRIRI has been helping the Central African Republic for 13 years

According to UN data, 80% of the Central African Republic (SAR) territory is in the hands of armed rebel groups. In these areas, the attendance of thousands of children is virtually impossible. Therefore from 2015 onwards, the flagship project of the Czech nonprofit organization SIRIRI, which is devoted to development and humanitarian aid in this country, is The Learning through Play  program that aims to improve first level education in the SAR. SIRIRI has been involved in the SAR since 2006, in the areas of health, agriculture and education. The Czech Embassy in Nigeria has long supported its activities. SIRIRI operates in 2 of the 14 Central African prefectures in a more secure part of the country. Both prefectures cover an area comparable to that of Bohemia.

The main idea of the program is to teach children reading and writing in their mother tongue – SANGO – by using modern pedagogical principles and by also using playful elements that the Czech educational reformer Jan Amos Komenský introduced to Czech schools four centuries ago. Part of the educational program involves didactic drawings on walls. Thanks to support from the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Nigeria which is also accredited to the Central African Republic, these drawings could be realized in 2018 in 50 school classes. The success of the Learning through Play is based on its simplicity and on the fact that teachers have really embraced it. The program offers a "revolutionary transformation in the quality of teaching in Central African primary schools," says Italian missionary Aurelio Gazzera, who participates in SIRIRI projects in the Central African Republic all year round. Over four years of program implementation in two large regions, 500 teachers were trained. The program brings positive and measurable results that enable modern and effective learning for at least 20 to 30,000 primary school pupils.

In 2018 SIRIRI with the "Learning through Play in the Central African Republic" Program received recognition by the Czech Development Agency for contributing to achievement of the Sustainable Development Objectives. Since the prize was awarded mainly for close cooperation with Central African teachers, two SIRIRI representatives - Ludmila Böhmová and Veronika Boháčová – presented it also to Central African teachers during their January visit to the CAR. According to these  teachers, such an award was highly motivating for them: "It is a great joy for us to hear that people elsewhere in the world know about us and appreciate our work."

Journalist and photographer  Jiří Pasz who also participated in the January expedition made about 15,000 photos. Small part of these will be selected for a photographic exhibition about the Central African Republic, which will be held  in the Czech Republic and probably also in France and Italy since March 2019.

Jiří Pasz wrote on his Facebook: "Comenius in Africa! Not only is it amazing to watch these drawings by David Böhm and George Franta in local schools, but it is even better to see that this art effectively helps teachers and children in practice. (...) Education is certainly one of the things that can launch this country and bring it out of a vicious circle. For me personally, it is also great to see how innovative, creative and efficient the Czechs can be - bringing honour to our country. And that even in the field where Western countries have been active for many decades longer than us - in humanitarian and development aid. I have to say that I have not seen such a good teaching system anywhere in the developing world. The Learning through Play in the Central African Republic! "

Improving the work of teachers and transferring know-how is a priority that all Central African and European authorities agree on. It is quite unique in the SAR that the SIRIRI program is aimed at rural areas and rural teachers. No other governmental or non-governmental organization in the SAR has been paying such systematic and long-term attention to the education of (rural) teachers.

Real prosperity can be brought to the SAR by educated entrepreneurs, doctors, skilled workers and responsible public servants. For children to grow into such men they need to start their early education in an effective, modern and meaningful way. This all the educational program Learning through Play in the SAR offers.
