Photo exhibition Street Economy I

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Abuja organized photo exhibition Street Economy I in colaboration with young photographer Abayomi Akande. The photo exhibition shows the life of street vendors in several sub-saharan countries and in Europe as well.

A series of 40 photographs presents scenes from the street selling of food, clothing, or consumer goods on the busy streets of african cities and tourist areas in Europe. The photos are results of several months of research and are taken in the time order.

The exhibition itself took place in the National Exhibition Pavilion in Abuja. The official opening ceremony commenced with the speech by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, H.E. Mr. Pavel Mikeš, who spoke about the art career of photographer Abayomi Akande, culminating in his first solo exhibition. Afterwards, the author of the photographs himself and the curator of the exhibition, Osi Otsemobor, talked about the idea of introducing the life of street vendors to a wide audience. Although street vending is prohibited in Nigeria, street sellers are indispensable part of the country's economy.

The exhibition was very successful, and the audience appreciated the impressive contrast of the struggle for the survival of street vendors in Africa over the life of traders in Europe, showing happiness and well-being.
