Minister for Economic Development of Kosovo presented priority projects

On June 29, 2016, Minister for Economic Development Blerand Stavileci presented economic development projects aimed at the development of transport infrastructure, energy, mining sector, telecommunications / IT technology and energy efficiency. These projects were presented to the accredited diplomats in Kosovo. Interesting opportunities are available to the Czech companies, particularly in upcoming projects in the sectors of transport infrastructure and energy.

The most important transport infrastructure projects of the ministry include the highway connections to Albania (in operation since 2014) and Macedonia (under construction, planned commissioning in 2018), the north-south rail corridor (Route 10) between the Serbian border in the north and Macedonian border in the south of the country and the rail-link between Pristina-city and the airport. The highway from Pristina to the border with Albania, with a length of 101 km, has been the biggest infrastructure project in Kosovo so far. The construction was executed by the US-Turkish consortium Bechtel-Enka, the Czech company Austin Detonator provided the explosive material.

Promising opportunities for the Czech companies in the energy sector are related to the reconstruction of the power plants Kosovo A and Kosovo B and to the construction of the new power plant Kosovo New/C.

The Implementation of the project New Kosovo/C is in progress. The Memorandum of Understanding between the US investor Contour Global and the government was signed in December 2015. The negotiations, the preparation of contracts, the preparation of tenders for each contract has been in progress and the financial security of the project has been refined. The feasibility study for the reconstruction of Kosovo B was launched by the European Commission in March 2016. The study should propose a technical solution, as well as financing options. Kosovo A is beyond its lifetime and a gradual shutdown is being prepared. However, the maintenance of the production of two blocks is being planned to prevent temporary shortages of electricity supply until the new power plant Kosovo New/C is put into operation.
