Special Envoy for Energy Security held talks in Finland

The Special Envoy for Energy Security of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Václav Bartuška, consulted with partners in Finland on 24-26 May 2023 security of supply, development of small modular reactors, issues of lack of harmonization in the nuclear energy sector, as well as other relevant topics. During his visit, he met with representatives of Fortum, TVO, STUK, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, VTT. He also visited Olkiluoto 3 Nuclear Power Plant and the Mayor of Eurajoki.

Securing reliable supply of nuclear fuel is crucial for both the Czech Republic and Finland as countries operating several nuclear power plants. In addition to building traditional nuclear capacity, both countries are actively engaged in developing small modular reactors and exploring suitable options for their future practical use. Finland sees their main benefit in the decentralized provision of district heating. Further development of nuclear capacity requires changes in the legislative framework and the maximum possible harmonization of safety and licensing regulations at global or at least regional level. There has been a broad support for nuclear power in Finland and municipalities have benefited significantly from the location of nuclear capacities.

After several decades, the world's first permanent deep geological repository Onkalo has been built near the Olkiluoto nuclear complex. The nuclear fuel should start to be stored next year or the year after at latest. The visit to the repository was also attended by Hana Žáková, Chairwoman of the Sub-Committee on Energy and Transport of the Committee on National Economy, Agriculture and Transport the Senate of the Czech Republic, and its member Leopold Sulovský.
