Art exhibition revealing life in prisons

The Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the Council of Europe together with the Arts Club of the Council of Europe held on 4 September an exhibition opening of photographs by Jan Jirkovský. The series of black and white images called „The Barriers“ reveals life in prisons while at the same time underlining the human side of prisoners, who are sometimes being overlooked by society.

The Ambassador Petr Válek opened the exhibition together with the president of the Art Club, Katarína Bikard, and the judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Kateřina Šimáčková. In her speech, Judge Šimáčková recalled, among other things, the experience of Radovan Procházka, a Czechoslovak political prisoner who was sentenced to prison for political reasons during the communist regime.

The exhibition caught interest of employees of the Council of Europe as well as local diplomatic missions and public. The exhibition will take place at the Council of Europe (Agora building) throughout the whole month of September. Jan Jirkovský's work can be also accessed via his website.
